The Messiah Of Gene Leahy Mall
by Jon McAlpin

The characters and events of this story are fiction. Names or similarities to
people living or dead are purely coincidence.

In the beginning was the Gene Leahy Mall in the holy city of Omaha, Nebraska. It consisted of grass, trees, walk paths, and footbridges. At its west end was a waterfall, which fed an artificial pond that ran its entire length. All things between 8th and 14th streets and between Farnam and Douglas streets comprised the Mall; and homeless men who were that close and yet that distant from the rest of mankind dwelt there. There was among them a man sent from God. The same came as a witness of things to come, so that those there with him in the Mall, and then the rest of us, might believe. He himself was not that which was to come, but was sent to bear witness of that which was. This is the account of one who entered there, dwelt for a time within, and then returned from that wilderness.
